Frontier Models

The week across the frontier labs — new defaults, previews and open-weight releases — plus where the coding benchmarks stand.

AnthropicNew default (Claude Max)

Claude Opus 5 — Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5 on 24 Jul 2026, positioning it as close to Fable 5 capability at half the price ($5/$25 per M tokens in/out — identical to Opus 4.8). The model introduces a user-facing Effort toggle (low/medium/high) so enterprises can balance cost against capability on a per-request basis. It is the new default on Claude Max, available via API as claude-opus-5, and the fourth Claude 5-series release in under two months. · 24 Jul

KimiOpen weights / World's largest open LLM

Kimi K3 — Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3 at WAIC Shanghai on 17 Jul, releasing the API immediately and open weights on 27 Jul. At 2.8 trillion total parameters (896 experts, 16 active per token) with native text/image/video and a 1M-token context, it is the largest open-weight model ever released. Moonshot self-reports it outperforms GPT-5.6 Sol and Opus 4.8 on key benchmarks, and priced it at ~$3/$15 per M tokens — cheaper than U.S. frontier equivalents. · 27 Jul (open weights)

AnthropicNew Free/Pro default

Claude Sonnet 5 — Launched 30 Jun 2026, Sonnet 5 is now the default model for Free and Pro plans at an introductory $2/$10 per M tokens through 31 Aug 2026, rising to $3/$15 thereafter. It is also available in Claude Code and on the Claude Platform API. A new tokenizer ships with it; community benchmarks flag up to 35% higher token consumption vs. prior Sonnet. · 30 Jun

OpenAIThree-tier lineup

GPT-5.6 (Sol / Terra / Luna) — OpenAI launched the GPT-5.6 family on 9 Jul 2026 in three tiers: Sol (high-end reasoning/coding at $5/$30 per M tokens), Terra (balanced), and Luna (lightweight). Sol was the first frontier model to clear a customer-by-customer US government export review before public release, and hit 750 tokens/sec on Cerebras hardware. The lineup emphasises token efficiency in response to enterprise complaints about Fable 5 burn rates. · 9 Jul

xAIFree Office add-in

Grok 4.5 (Microsoft Office add-ins) — xAI launched free Grok add-ins for Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint on 20 Jul via the Microsoft Marketplace. The Excel add-in writes formulas, builds pivot tables, and analyses data by natural-language chat. Content is sent to xAI servers; enterprise data-governance teams have flagged the default-on telemetry setting. · 20 Jul

AnthropicRestored worldwide

Claude Fable 5 — Claude Fable 5, which had been suspended 12 Jun under a US export-control directive, returned to full global availability on 1 Jul 2026 after the Commerce Department lifted the restriction. Fable 5 remains Anthropic's top-tier model at $10/$50 per M tokens and is still recommended for long-running autonomous agent workloads. · 1 Jul

Removed old-generation tiers (Claude Haiku 4.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro / 3.1 Flash-Lite) — each is still that maker’s current model in the tier, so dropped for a latest-generation board, not deprecated. Gemini’s LLM entry is now 3.5 Flash (Pro tier temporarily empty, delayed ~17 Jul). Current Anthropic line: Fable 5 · Opus 4.8 · Sonnet 5.
