Frontier Models

The week across the frontier labs — new defaults, previews and open-weight releases — plus where the coding benchmarks stand.

AnthropicNew default (Claude Max)

Claude Opus 5 — Launched 24 Jul 2026, Opus 5 delivers near-Fable-5 intelligence at half the input price ($5/$25 per MTok), with a 1M-token context window and a low/medium/high reasoning-effort toggle per request. It ships as claude-opus-5 across the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry, claude.ai, Claude Code and Cowork, and is the new default model on Claude Max. Anthropic says it beats Opus 4.8 on agentic-coding (Frontier-Bench) and novel reasoning (ARC-AGI-3), while trailing Fable 5 only on cybersecurity and biology tasks. · 24 Jul

Kimi K3 — Moonshot AI launched Kimi K3 on 16 Jul 2026 — a 2.8-trillion-parameter sparse MoE model with 896 experts (16 active per token), a 1M-token context window, and native text/image/video input. It ranks #1 on the Frontend Code Arena (1,679 Elo, ahead of Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol) and #3 on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v4.1 (57.1), making it the strongest open model ever released. Full weights (~1.4 TB in MXFP4) are promised by 27 Jul 2026; API pricing is $3/$15 per MTok. · 16 Jul

Claude Fable 5 (Mythos-class) — global restore — Anthropic restored global access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on 1 Jul 2026, 19 days after a US government export-control directive required suspension on 12 Jun. Access resumed without ID-verification requirements but with new cybersecurity content classifiers described as 'the strongest safeguards'. Fable 5 remains Anthropic's most capable publicly available model at $10/$50 per MTok. · 1 Jul

Removed old-generation tiers (Claude Haiku 4.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro / 3.1 Flash-Lite) — each is still that maker’s current model in the tier, so dropped for a latest-generation board, not deprecated. Gemini’s LLM entry is now 3.5 Flash (Pro tier temporarily empty, delayed ~17 Jul). Current Anthropic line: Fable 5 · Opus 4.8 · Sonnet 5.

Methodology
  • Benchmark-anchored scoring: the score is a 0–100 composite anchored to SWE-Bench Verified/Pro, HLE, GPQA, AA Intelligence Index and AA-Omniscience. Displayed sub-scores are analytical mappings from those benchmarks — not vendor marketing claims. OpenAI & xAI report agentic-coding indices & Terminal-Bench rather than SWE-Bench Pro.
  • Confidence flags on every row: ✅ verified from a primary/neutral-aggregator source; ⚠️ partial or estimated; ❓ released but no public benchmarks yet.
  • Egyptian Arabic gate (voice): retained. Only ElevenLabs v3 confirms Egyptian; GLM-ASR-2512 confirms generic Arabic. GLM-4-Voice (CN/EN only) fails the gate.
  • Still not scored (benchmarks pending): Google Gemini 3.5 Pro (delayed, ~17 Jul, enterprise preview). No model newer than GPT-5.6 / Grok 4.5 / GLM-5.2 confirmed as of 6 Jul 2026.

AMD ↔ Anthropic — 2 GW MI450 deployment + up to $5bn equity investment · $5bn equity + tens of $bn in chip procurement

(22 Jul) AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership in which Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in AMD Helios rack-scale solutions, with the first gigawatt of deployment beginning H1 2027. AMD committed a milestone-linked equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic — its first-ever check into the AI firm — and the two companies signed an engineering collaboration to accelerate AMD ROCm development using Claude. The deal is framed as a direct challenge to Nvidia's dominant position in AI accelerators.

OpenAI ↔ Nvidia — 10 GW Vera Rubin deployment, up to $100bn investment (LOI) · up to $100bn

(22 Sep 2025 LOI; first GW deployment H2 2026) OpenAI and Nvidia signed a letter of intent for a landmark partnership to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems for OpenAI's AI infrastructure. Nvidia intends to invest up to $100 billion progressively as each gigawatt of capacity comes online, with the first gigawatt using the Vera Rubin platform targeting H2 2026.
